The journey

Working with YAKUM

During our time in the Ecuadorian Amazon, we worked with YAKUM, an organisation helping Indigenous communities restore their forests and strengthen their food traditions.

YAKUM works alongside communities to grow diverse native trees and plants that provide nutritious food, medicines and materials for traditional crafts. Its work also supports tree nurseries, seed exchanges and the sharing of plant knowledge between generations. Community mapping helps identify forest resources and threats to ancestral territories.

YAKUM was founded by Nick Ovenden, a biologist, educator and active member of The Explorers Club who was named an Explorers Club 50 honoree in 2023. His approach brings forest conservation together with the knowledge, priorities and livelihoods of the people who live there.
